I am going to be adding to the current watercolor series For the Beauty of the Earth, and feel inspired by this painting to do more in the same vein. On a whim I decided to make the backdrop be only shades of black and gray, making the flower really stand out in a way it couldn’t with a color background.

It made me think of having hope in dark places, when everything around seems either hard or painful or lonely or depressing, but there is a spot of brightness and beauty that shines through it all. I think we can all relate on some level to that feeling.

I would LOVE some feedback as far as what type of flower you think would look good in this style of painting. Gerber daisies are one of my favorites, what are yours? I might just paint it!
